Lucinda | Dead at 26 | Now age 68 | Human | FC: Amanda Seyfried | Open
Specialty: Dance
Ability: Graceful, light on her feet, and poised.
Lucinda is probably the most graceful person you’ll ever meet, inside or outside of Happenstance. She’s feisty, witty, smart, and beautiful all at the same time, and it seems to be a deadly combination. Lucinda and Lucifer have been together for longer than anyone else can remember; their love is all the success story Happenstance needs. Along with playing house with the handsome angel, she also runs The Bakery; something she takes great pleasure in.
Once a month, Lucinda dances. The whole town comes to see her; after all, her dancing is the reason the place exists to begin with. It’s beautiful. It’s hypnotic. It’s entrancing. And so is she. Even the demons stay away, afraid of being caught under her spell.
The one thing Luce loves more than anything is her daughter, Aurora. No matter what, she’ll do anything for her, as will her father. Between the two of them, Aurora is probably the most loved child in all of Happenstance—Luce loves it that way. She would give her daughter the world, if she would only let her.
Silvia | Dead at 20 | Now age 70 | Human | FC: Sierra Kusterbeck | Open
Specialty: Shape Shifter
Ability: Can change her body into various animals.
When Silvia first got to Happenstance, food was scarce. 1964 Happenstance was a barren, starving wasteland consisting of her, Lucifer, and Grace. Because Angels don’t need to eat, neither of the two ever considered something as simple as a grocery store. It was Silvia who showed them just how delicious eating could be. Since then, both have had a sweet tooth, and a particular fondness for the eternally-20 year old human. Silvia provides everyone with food, no cost; anything and everything is made available at The Green Grocer’s Market. Even though she was raised a southern belle, she’s certainly not above getting her hands dirty. Literally. Silvia can shapeshift. Anything furry and she can be it. Her ideas about it were still undefined when she decided, so now whatever has fur is hers to play with. She doesn’t really mind; she can get all the juicy gossip when she’s a mouse sitting on the windowsill. She also has a particular fondness for Hunter, seeing as he always treats her with respect, animal or not.
Silvia’s hunger for gossip is the thing the demons pick at the most. Surely, someone who could take such pleasure in hearing other’s misfortune can renounce God with little scruple? But Silvia is a Belle, born and raised, and that means that her Christian values are solid as a rock. She’s believed in God since the day she was born; she only went to Happenstance because she thought the people who were out of heaven might be lonely. The first person to give in would be anyone but her.
Valerie | 24 | Nephilim | FC: Emilie de Ravin | Open
Specialty: Athletics
Abilities: Incredibly good at anything physical.
Her father being Gabriel, Valerie always thought her ability would be something more… war oriented. Something cooler. Unfortunately, in her opinion, all she got was athletics. Sure, it was nice to be flexible and to never exert herself, but all in all it was a pretty worthless talent. Why couldn’t she be like Ashlyn, with all her power, or even Mitchell, who could at least help others? All Valerie can do is throw some heavy things, and in her opinion, that sucks- but she was never one to outwardly complain. She always wanted to show her father, and others, that she is strong.
Of course, the demons know everything. She can’t hide from them and isn’t trying to. Why should she? She’s sick of being strong, and sometimes she thinks they’re right. What has God ever done for her? What did he ever do for her father, the one person she loves more than anything? Nothing. God tossed him aside as easily as he would a paper ball, despite the fact that he’d served loyally as his most successful archangel for millennia.
No, Valerie is certainly not happy with the ‘all-knowing creator’, and she doesn’t quite care who knows it.
Grace | 7,824 | Angel | FC: Hannah Murray
Specialty: Knowledge
Abilities: Can answer any question, knows everything, and has infinite wisdom.
Grace is the most knowledgeable person around Happenstance, for obvious reasons. She’ll tell you anything you need to know. Not only about books and school stuff; she can tell you any of the latest gossip, anyone’s secrets, anything. Her abilities are both a gift and a curse. People are weirded out by her, afraid to be around her because she literally knows everything. The answers to your biography test- you’re deepest darkest secret. She just can’t get away from her power, and tends to blurt out things and babble to the people around her. She owns the Happenstance Library and can get you any book you want, free of charge. She rarely leaves her post.
The truth about Grace is that she’s lonely. She was second to fall, only after Lucifer, she fell because she knew so much that she knew Happenstance would need someone like her. And need her they do. But just because they need her doesn’t mean that anyone actually cares for her. The Angels she’s known for years are cordial, but other than that, no one really talks to her. It’s hard to talk to someone who knows what you’re going to say before you say it. The closest thing she has to a friend is Aurora, but even then she never gets too close. The Demons know how alone Grace truly is—they use it to their advantage, trying to lure her with offers of affection and love. But Grace knows all; then again, sometimes we’re all blind when looking for affection.
Ashlyn | 16 | Nephilim | FC: Kaya Scodelario | Open
Specialty: Nature
Ability: Element manipulation
As one of the most gifted Nephilim children in existence, Ashlyn has a reputation to uphold. Always prim, always proper, always perfect. Ashlyn is that beautiful girl in school that everyone wants to be and absolutely no one can touch. For being only sixteen, she’s very admired—even the seniors at HA can’t help but want to be her.
Inside, however, Ashlyn is a wreck. The pressure is definitely getting to her. Why did she have to be born to a hippie mom with a nature affinity and the angel of nature itself? Why did she have to get this ability? The only thing that helps her is her visits to Scorpius. She doesn’t think he really pays attention to her, but she doesn’t mind. He gives her what she needs. The drugs, the alcohol—all of it gives her release. Release from the pressure, from the rest of society, eyes always watching her every move.
The truth is, Ashlyn isn’t the goodie two shoes she makes herself out to be. She’s addicted to so many things—too many to stop now. No matter how nice she acts, how sweet she seems, don’t let that fool you. If anyone was close to renouncing her creator, it would be Ash.
Aurora | 16 | Nephilim | FC: Karen Gillan | Open
Specialty: Light
Ability: Can manipulate light
Aurora never liked attention. Unfortunately, when your father was the first angel to fall from heaven, it’s a little hard to avoid. That’s right; her father was Lucifer. Aurora’s parents are so in love it’s almost sickening, in her opinion. When she was born, her parents couldn’t be happier, and they spared nothing and no one in order to get her whatever she wanted. But Aurora never wanted much. All she really needs is the love of her family and a good book to keep her happy.
Aurora’s a bit shy, honestly, and this means the Demons can’t get enough of her. Not to mention she’s way beyond off limits. As a result, she’s gotten to know quite a few of the demon arrivals in Happenstance, and sometimes she wonders just how demonic they really are. But then they go and come around asking her to do all sorts of heinous things, and she decides they definitely are. There’s certainly more than meets the eye when it comes to them, but how is she ever going to discover their secrets when they keep frustrating her so much?
All Aurora really wants is to spend time with the closest thing she has to a friend, Grace, at the library. But the demons just keep coming, and their charming, lost-boy/girl ways are starting to break her down.
Cole | 3,482 | Angel | FC: Kerli | Open
Specialty: Liberation/Freedom
Abilities: Is able to channel the person you truly want to be, removes outside judgement, etc.
Cole is that hippie, wild-child type of girl. She’s the reason for the entire decade we now call the 60’s. Whatever you can say about her, she certainly does things on her own terms, and no matter what happens, you can always count on Cole to be the one to rebel. She plays by her own rules because that’s how she was created—a trait, as she discovered in Heaven, that didn’t exactly make her keen to follow in another’s footsteps. So she fell.
Now, Cole does things on her own terms. Whenever the townspeople have a problem or a secret, they almost always end up talking to Cole about it. She’ll never judge or treat you any differently. In fact, leaving your secrets with Cole is the most liberating feeling. As if you’re lighter than air. That’s the trademark, after all.
Then again, freedom isn’t always good or bad. Cole has always toed the edge of the line, because too much freedom can be a bad thing. She’s balanced on a knife’s edge; who’s to say to which side she’ll fall?
Lyric | 63 | Angel | FC: Lights Bokan | Open
Specialty: Music
Abilities: Can master any instrument, hypnotic voice, and can foster budding music talent.
Lyric is always in the music. When anyone in Happenstance takes up an instrument, they go to Lyric; she can get them what they need. She also teaches music to the high schoolers at Happenstance Academy. When she sees a student with special talent, she can nurture it and help it grow into something wonderful, something incredible. She also writes music of her own. Every week Lyric plays songs down at the Diner, and the people from all over town come together to see her play. There’s something about her voice that just draws people to her. On top of that, Lyric is sweet and adorable and just a little bit nerdy. Along with being musical, she’s a pretty avid gamer; she can advance in World of Warcraft faster than you can download the game. All in all, Lyric is a pretty cool girl; everyone she meets tends to befriend her.
The thing is, the reason she fell in the first place was to fall in love. So why can’t she find a single person to dedicate her songs to? The Demons have been telling her all sorts of things, and it’s wearing on her like nothing else ever has. They’re certainly exceptional at her jobs; Lyric can attest to that. Is it so hard to find a single person to fall in love with a geeky, music-obsessed angel?
Lola | 1,215 | Angel | FC: Megan Fox | Open
Specialty: Fashion and Style
Abilities: Knows exactly the right clothes to put anyone in, and is always ahead of trends.
People used to think Lola was a useless angel. After all, the title does kind of sound silly. Angel of Fashion and Style? Who likes to announce that right before they kick someone’s ass? But in Happenstance, Lola is revered simply for the fact that she’s the only one able to get clothes for them all. It isn’t easy, living in a town cut off from heaven and earth. The things you need… well, someone has to get them. Lola feels useful here. Happy here. And she isn’t just a pretty face or a fashion critic. Lola is smart, beautiful, funny, charming—who wouldn’t want to be her? The only thing bringing Lola down is her own insecurity. Being shunted to the side every single moment in heaven until finally diving off the edge into a world unknown is a life tough to live, especially when you’re over a thousand years old. Lola isn’t quite sure how to believe in herself anymore, no matter how much she acts the diva when you visit her boutique.
The truth is, Lola’s hard to get to. The real Lola, that is. Diva fashion stylist extraordinaire on the outside, absolute wreck on the inside, that’s her. But the Demons can sense what she really feels, and they prey on her like vultures at a carrion feast. Useless. Worthless. Nothing. That’s how God made you feel. And they’re right. They’re fucking right. Lola hates it, but they’re right. How long will it take until she renounces someone she was meant to adore everlastingly?
